A lot of people wonder what a PCB inspection should entail. The truth is that inspections do vary, but a typical one will consist of a few things. Here is what a typical checklist printed circuit board inspection will consist of.

First, the inspector should make sure that the thickness of the board is correct. They’ll also want to look at the surface to see how rough it is, as well as look for war-page.

Secondly, the dimensions need to be checked. Both the specification of the assembly and the dimensions of the assembly need to match up. An inspection will also include checking out the electric connectors’ dimensions.

Thirdly, the conductive patterns are typically inspected to ensure it is the right clearness and that it’s integrity isn’t compromised. Furthermore, the inspector looks for things such as burrs, solder bridging, voids and open circuits.

Fourthly, the quality of the PCB’s surface is looked at during an inspection. The inspector will usually look for dents and scratches. They’ll also keep an eye out for pinholes. If any of these are found, then the board may need to be repaired or replaced entirely.


During an inspection, the VIAs are checked. The inspector will verify that they are all in the proper position. If they are not, then this will be corrected. The inspector will make sure the VIAs are not inaccurately punched or that they are missed. Furthermore, an inspection will ensure that there are no nodules or voids present.

The pad plating needs to be in good condition. This is why part of the inspection will consist of looking at its roughness, firmness and brightness. If there are bulge defects present, then this will be noted and fixed if possible. Otherwise, the board will likely need to be replaced.

Finally, the quality of the coating will be checked. If the coating isn’t up to par, then this will be addressed. During the course of the inspection, the the coating’s color will be checked to ensure that it is the proper color. Not only that, but the color of the plating flux will be checked to ensure it is even and firm.

Those are what is usually involved with a PCB inspection. Remember, it is important to perform an inspection on a regular basis because inspections are the best ways to ensure everything is in working order or if there is a potential issue that should be fixed.
