Asperger’s syndrome is at times viewed as high-functioning autism. Its diagnosis currently falls under the purview of ASD (autism spectrum disorder). ASD is essentially a cluster of neurodevelopmental conditions affecting how an individual interacts and functions.

Asperger’s Treatment

Receiving early ASD diagnosis is imperative so that necessary treatment could begin at the earliest. The kind of symptoms and how severe they are would vary between children.

The symptoms are classified into two groups: behavioral patterns and social interaction issues. Individuals with Asperger’s usually have strong intellectual and verbal skills compared to people with other autism types.

The issues with communication or interaction could be:

• the inability to make or maintain eye contact
• having trouble initiating or continuing a dialogue
• having trouble expressing emotions or feelings or not recognizing other people’s feelings

Behavioral patterns that could be found in individuals with ASD could comprise:

• having stringent routines and getting agitated if those schedules get disrupted
• having very low or very high reactivity to bodily stimulation
• getting fixated on a thing or activity with tremendous intensity

Treatment usually concentrates on teaching kids how to better engage or communicate with other people. This could promulgate positive behaviors while suppressing bad behaviors. Asperger’s treatment isn’t purely focused on behavioral therapies, though. There are several other treatments possible, which include dietary changes and medications.

There are alternative treatment options too, which include herbal remedies, massage therapy, acupuncture, neurofeedback, and animal therapy. Some alternative treatments could lead to issues, however. Therefore, it’s advised that one confirms an alternative treatment’s efficacy and risk factors before going through it.

Treatment Providers

Initial ASD screening can be carried out during your kid’s routine check-ups. If the doctor comes across a possible developmental issue(s), more thorough screening is then performed.

The primary care doctor of your kid could also conduct a more detailed screening. However, they could also direct you to a child psychologist, developmental pediatrician, child neurologist, or any other child health specialist.

Once your kid gets diagnosed with ASD, a team of specialists could come on board for the treatment. These professionals could be pediatricians or primary care doctors, psychologists or psychiatrists, developmental pediatricians, neurologists, physical therapists, language or speech therapists, occupational therapists, and teachers or social workers.

Treatment Goals

The Asperger’s treatment overall objective is to help an individual with ASD to be more of themselves. Even though Asperger’s syndrome is a milder type of autism, kids could significantly benefit from early intervention. The treatment could offer them important behavioral and social tools that they could employ for the remainder of their lives.
