Kitchen Refinishing: What to Know

When cabinet doors look dull, scratched, or yellowed but the boxes still sit square and feel solid, replacing the entire kitchen may be unnecessary. Kitchen refinishing can refresh the visible surfaces while preserving a layout that already works. The work typically involves cleaning, sanding, repairing minor imperfections, and applying a new coating to doors, drawer fronts, and cabinet frames. That makes it different from refacing, which usually replaces the doors and drawer fronts while keeping the existing boxes. For homeowners who like their storage arrangement, kitchen refinishing is often the more sensible first option.

The finish succeeds or fails before the first coat is applied. Degreasing removes cooking residue that can prevent adhesion, while sanding creates a slightly rough surface for primer and paint to grip. Adhesion means the coating stays bonded rather than peeling from slick laminate, old varnish, or contaminated wood. Small dents and chipped edges should be filled and leveled before sanding, because paint will not hide changes in shape. A professional also protects counters, floors, appliances, and nearby walls. Skipping preparation may produce a fresh color temporarily, but it rarely produces a durable, even result.

Material matters when choosing the new appearance. Solid wood and wood veneer can often be painted, stained, or clear-coated, although veneer requires careful sanding because its surface layer is thin. A stain changes the color while leaving much of the grain visible. Paint creates a more uniform surface and can conceal mismatched tones, but it also makes poor repairs easier to notice. Laminate and thermofoil doors require a different preparation strategy because their nonporous surfaces resist ordinary coatings. In those cases, the condition of the covering and the suitability of the planned coating should be assessed before work begins.

Refinishing should not be used to disguise failing cabinet construction. For example, if a sink base has swollen from repeated water exposure, or if shelves sag because fasteners have loosened, the underlying problem needs attention first. Refacing may be a better fit when the boxes are structurally sound but the door style is dated or damaged. It replaces doors, drawer fronts, hinges, and sometimes hardware without changing the cabinet footprint. A homeowner with sturdy oak boxes might choose refacing for a modern profile, while someone satisfied with the existing doors might choose refinishing instead.

Hardware is a small detail with an outsized effect on the finished kitchen. New knobs or pulls can change how doors feel to use, but their spacing must suit the door rail, drawer width, and existing holes. Hinges also deserve inspection. Worn hinges can cause uneven gaps, sagging doors, or a soft-close feature that no longer works correctly. Before ordering replacements, measure hole spacing and check whether the hardware is surface-mounted or concealed. A new finish cannot correct doors that are misaligned, so installers should adjust reveals, the consistent gaps between adjoining doors and drawers, during reinstallation.

A careful process is organized in stages rather than treated as a quick color change. Doors and drawer fronts are removed, labeled, and transported or positioned so each piece returns to its original location. Cabinet frames are cleaned and prepared in place, with masking used to limit overspray or drips. Primer helps seal porous areas and create a stable base; the finish coat supplies the final color and resistance to everyday handling. Drying time matters because a surface that feels dry may still be soft beneath. Doors should be reinstalled only after the coating has cured adequately for normal use.

The right choice depends on condition, layout, and the look you want to keep. A small kitchen with solid maple doors may need little more than repair, prep, and a carefully chosen finish. A larger kitchen with dated profiles, damaged fronts, and good cabinet boxes may justify refacing, especially when new hardware and drawer accessories are part of the plan. Ask for a clear scope covering preparation, repairs, coating method, hardware, protection, and cleanup. For additional cabinet refinishing guidance, compare the proposed process with the condition of your doors rather than choosing based on color alone.
