How to Assess Blinds During a Home Consultation

A home consultation is most useful when the adviser examines the room rather than relying on a few measurements and a colour screen. They can see how afternoon glare reaches the sofa, whether a window handle projects into the opening and how close a blind would sit to a desk or cupboard. The direction of the glass, the room’s evening use and the level of privacy required all affect the recommendation. Treat the appointment as an inspection and comparison exercise, not an obligation to place an order. Ask for several suitable options, their limitations and a written price before making a decision.

Fit is one of the first practical matters to settle. A recess blind sits within the window opening and usually gives a tidy appearance, but gaps beside the frame can admit daylight. A face-fit blind covers the opening and some of the surrounding wall, which can improve coverage around an uneven frame. It also needs clear wall space and may clash with a handle, cupboard door or adjacent architrave. During a blinds in home consultation, ask the adviser to show where the blind will sit when lowered and raised. Confirm who takes the final measurements and whether installation is included in the quotation.

A careful measurer will inspect more than the width and height of the glass. They may check whether the reveal is square, whether the sill projects, and whether a nearby opening door restricts the blind’s movement. It is worth having the latest floor plan or previous quotation available, although neither should replace an on-site check. Take photographs of handles, power points and wall-mounted furniture before the appointment if the consultant has not visited the property. That small habit can prevent a second visit caused by a detail hidden behind a curtain or missed from across the room.

Fabric performance deserves closer attention than a small colour sample. Light-filtering material reduces the harshness of daylight while leaving the room relatively bright. Blockout material cuts incoming light more substantially, but it does not guarantee complete darkness if light can enter around the sides, headrail or bottom edge. Screen fabrics are often described by an openness factor, which indicates how much of the weave is open. A lower figure generally offers more privacy and sun control, while a higher figure tends to preserve more outward view. Test samples against the actual window in daylight, then check them again with the room lit after sunset.

The window’s orientation can change the sensible balance between glare, heat and visibility. East-facing windows may be difficult during breakfast, while west-facing glass can produce strong late-day glare when someone is working or watching television. Internal blinds can reduce the effect of direct sunlight, but they may not prevent all solar heat from entering. A pale or reflective fabric may help with brightness and warmth, although it can change the view and the room’s appearance. If heat is the main concern, ask whether an external awning or other outside treatment should be assessed alongside an internal blind.

Operation should fit the way the room is used every day. A chain-operated blind is familiar and generally simple, but the chain needs to remain accessible without catching on a chair, benchtop or child’s play area. Motorisation may suit a wide, high or hard-to-reach window, though it introduces questions about charging, wiring, controls and purchase cost. Ask where switches or remotes will be kept, how the blind works during a power interruption and what maintenance the mechanism requires. If children or pets use the room, request clear information about the operating system and the placement of any accessible controls.

A street-facing bedroom may need privacy during the day as well as reduced early light. A blockout blind can help with darkness, but a tightly covered window exposed to strong sun may still contribute to heat. A sheer or light-filtering layer can provide daytime privacy while retaining some daylight, although two layers require more depth and expense. A home office may have a different priority: a screen fabric that limits reflections on a monitor without making the room feel enclosed. Write down the main requirement for each window, such as privacy, glare control, darkness, insulation or an unobstructed view, before comparing fabrics.

Before approving the work, read the quotation line by line rather than relying on the total at the bottom. Check the product type, fabric specification, control method, number of windows, installation timing and any items excluded from the price. Compare internal window treatments with curtains or shutters if a different covering may suit the room’s light and privacy needs. Also ask about cleaning, particularly if the fabric will sit above a sink or beside a frequently opened door. Confirm whether the blind can be removed for cleaning, how replacement parts are obtained and how far the blind projects when raised. Taking the written quotation home gives you time to compare like with like without pressure.
