Guitars are among the most durable musical instruments. But that doesn’t mean they don’t require their fair share of care and attention. Cleaning a guitar is no rocket science and a simple guitar cleaning bundle would usually suffice. The key, however, is to clean the guitar regularly and subject it to zero abuse.

Cleaning Essentials

As aforementioned, cleaning the guitar is the most effective and simplest maintenance task. The guitar must be cleaned regularly, every time dust or dirt accumulates. An ideal guitar cleaning bundle should comprise a feather duster, absorbent cleaning cloth, clean dusting cloth, guitar polish, and chrome or mild jewelry polish. Such a cleaning bundle would make a perfect gift for people who are just getting started with their guitars.

The feather duster helps knock dust off objects without having to apply any pressure. Even mild pressure could mar a delicate finish, like those on a guitar. The absorbent cloth is ideal for polishing and cleaning your strings. And the dusting cloth helps keep the instrument dust-free. Make sure you do not use the same dusting cloth for the strings and the body, as oils from strings could transfer onto the guitar’s body.

A guitar polish could help get rid of any deeply etched grime that cannot be cleaned with some basic dusting. Hair paintbrush for small camels can help eliminate string dust in hard-to-access areas such as the bridge, headstock, and pickup spots. The chrome polish could be used for cleaning guitar hardware, thereby restoring luster.

The cleaning should be done in phases, with dedicated time and effort invested into cleaning the neck and body, fretboard, electronics, etc. A damp cloth should be used for cleaning the guitar’s metal sections. The wet cloth can also be used for cleaning other parts of the guitar. The more difficult-to-access areas can be cleaned with cotton swabs. These places include the pickup cavities and specific areas on the bridge. Remember to take good care of the wood portions of the guitar. You should not use commercial wood polishes to clean them as that could end up damaging the guitar.

Repair Tools

Cleaning is not all. You’ll also need a tool kit comprising all tools necessary for keeping your guitar in optimal working condition. The tool kit should consist of some miniature screwdrivers, miniature ratchet set, and Allen and hex wrench. This kit should always be a part of your guitar case.
