Alcohol and drug abuse training programs are designed to provide assistance to both employers and employees as it relates to creating and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment. More particularly, these programs offer practical and effective tools to handle substance abuse issues in the workplace.

Regardless of industry or size, all businesses are affected by substance abuse affects. There are approximately 12.3 million adult Americans who currently use illicit drug users and 77 percent or 9.4 million of them are employed. Many of these training programs typically cover the misuse of prescription drugs, the use of illegal drugs, alcohol abuse and methods to use to recognize the signs of employees carrying out their duties while being under the influence. In addition, many of the programs use substance abuse training videos as a means of promoting awareness in the particular place of work.

Definition of Substance Abuse

In essence, substance abuse involves using a substance for a purpose that is different from its intended social or medical purpose. The abuse of substances leads to an impaired mental and physical condition and could result in a misleading state of euphoria and a deceitful sense of well-being as well. Substance abuse can often easily lead to addiction and bring about a level of dependency that can be mental, physical or both. Additionally, this type of abuse can create financial, family and personal problems beyond the control of abuser.

Regardless of the type of impairing substance by which an employee is affected, whether it is street drugs, prescription medications, alcohol or something else, there is a higher risk for distress, pain and disability. There is also a higher risk for absenteeism, presenteeism, workplace accidents, discrimination and stigmatization, family or social problems, deteriorating mental or physical health, and a reduction in decreased productivity. In addition to all of these issues, substance abuse in the workplace is very costly as well.

It is important to know that there is abuse potential in all controlled substances. There are some drugs the alleviate depression, anxiety or pain. Some energize the user and some drugs induce sleep.

The five categories of drugs that exist are:

• Depressants
• Narcotics
• Anabolic Steroids
• Stimulants
• Hallucinogens

This type of training is not intended to teach participants to diagnose drug-related or take Alcohol and drug abuse training. It is also not designed to help participants to provide counseling. It is designed to assist staff members in being aware of substance abuse in the workplace and the significance of the expectations and practices within the organization. Essentially, it provides supervisors with the tools to recognize and address employee performance problems.
