What You Need To Know About Golf Club Angles

Lie Angle

Check if the lie angle of your irons is appropriate if you have an unusually shallow or steep swing, or if you are tall or short. If the head of the iron is too flat (i.e. the toe points down) at the point of impact, it can act for an instant as a pivot, drag on the grass, and cause the plane of the face to turn slightly towards the right. This means that when the ball is hit, it will go towards that direction. If the lie angle is too upright, what will happen is the club’s heel will dig into the ground and cause the shot to pull to the left.

As a rule, taller golfers may need their lies to be tweaked a little bit upright and shorter ones will generally benefit from lies that are slightly flatter. Most golf club manufacturers offer a variety of irons in different lies. However, a majority of them only offer these irons in a special order.

Now, the question is, how can you tell if the lie is correct or not in your club? The way to do it is not hard at all, in fact, it is very simple. Approach one of the pros at your local club and he or she will be able to help you. What he or she will do is take some impact or masking tape and put it on the sole of the club. You will then be asked to hit some balls off a lie testing board. A hole or mark will be left on the board when you hit a ball off it. If the lie angle is correct, the mark will appear on the tape where the center of the sole is. If the marking is towards the heel, the angle is too upright, and if it is towards the toe, the angle is too flat.

Even though an incorrect lie angle causes the loft and plane of the club to tilt, sheeting the right lie angle is more important on short iron that long ones.
