Martinique Island At A Glance

Known locally as the “Isle of Flowers”, and an overseas territory of France, Martinique is the 3rd largest island of the Lesser Antilles group, in the eastern part of the Caribbean Sea. It lies approximately 450km off South America’s north east coast and stretches some 70km in length, with a width of around 30km across. Its population of not far short of 400,000 inhabitants, makes it one of the regions highest densities. It has a two very contrasting seasons, dry and hot between December and June and rainy between July and November.

Sheer cliffs overlook the landscape around the northern coastline of Martinique Island, with remnants of volcanic ash visible in the sand, giving it a distinctive and rather unappealing grey and black tint; however further south the beaches are gloriously white and very much the opposite in attraction. Two large bays dominate the western coast, one of which is at Fort-de-France, the capital of the island and where the majority of people live. The eastern side is largely lined by coves, headlands and beautiful coral reefs.

Combined, it makes Martinique a growing tourist area, especially for the thriving cruise ships, who regularly bring eager customers onto the island from all parts; but particularly the United States, Canada and naturally France. Travelling around is relatively easy, with an Express-way linking the main towns with the coastal districts; plus enchanting coastal steamers, which connect specific points.

The highest peak on Martinique Island. It stands an impressive 1,397 metres above sea level and has quite a history. It has had several large eruptions in its lifespan, which is believed to be around 400,000 years, none more so than a devastating blast in 1902, that more or less destroyed the town of Saint Pierre, which sits at its foot. Almost 30,000 people sadly lost their lives and a museum on the island charts the events of that fateful occasion. It is possible to climb the mountain, with three separate routes established, for a safe ascent. Once at the top, the views around the island and across the sea are stunning.

Many visitors will head for the Grand Marche, the Spice Market, which is teeming with fresh produce, and unique crafts from the island, including an aphrodisiac made from bark, stripped from trees only found on Martinique. Mornings are extremely busy, but also the time when it is most likely that a bargain can be purchased.

However, the one commodity the island is best known for is its rum. The locals have been producing it for centuries and no visit would be complete without partaking in trip to one of their fabulous distilleries.
