Gold Ireland is a company that has been in the gold business since 1887. It has a long history of success and they are still going strong today! Gold Ireland’s story begins in 1887 when the Gold Bullion Coin Act was passed by Congress. The Gold Bullion Coin Act required all gold coins to be made from 90% pure gold, 10% copper. This law had an unintended consequence for Gold Ireland: it forced them to create smaller coins (1/10th of an ounce) because the old larger coin presses couldn’t produce small enough pieces with less than 20% copper content.

It coined the Gold Krugerrand in 1967, which was South Africa’s response to the Gold Maple Leaf from Canada.

In 1968 it created a sovereign for Queen Elizabeth II at her request – it had more gold than any other coin ever! The Gold Irish Coin of 1969 contained 40% pure gold and weighed one ounce. This is four times as much as its earlier coins containing only ten percent pure gold.

The Gold Bullion Act changed again in 1973 with the passage of Public Law 93-110, this law allowed America to mint American Gold Eagle bullion coins. In 1985, Congress passed legislation allowing US Mints to produce silver bullion commemorative coins. After that point, it no longer produced its own silver or Gold Gold Coins for sale in America.

The Gold Irish Coin is the only Gold Bullion coin with its own Act of Congress that does not contain any Silver or Copper. This act is Public Law 97-280, which was signed into law on October 15, 1982, by President Reagan. It also authorized the production of silver and gold commemorative coins to mark the 1984 Olympic games (and others)
It has existed since 1987, but it wasn’t until 1997 when American Gold Eagle bullion coins surpassed one billion ounces sold. In contrast, Gold Eagles were a small fraction of these sales at just two hundred thousand–less than half a percent! The British Britannia gold bullion coin did have over five troy ounces sold from 1987 to 1997, but Gold Ireland remained the top Gold bullion coin sold by a large margin. Gold has been used as money for centuries and its scarcity was one reason why it became an appealing investment. Historically, this metal has always maintained a value because there is not much Gold available on Earth so people have historically valued things made from Gold more than other items of equal quality
