Communication delivery systems are the delivery of communication from one person or group to another. They can be in written, oral, or visual forms. The delivery system is vital because it determines how the audience will receive your message. There are four types of delivery systems that you should know about before deciding which type to use for your communication needs:

Memorized

This is one of the oldest delivery systems that still exist today. This delivery system is usually memorized and recited word for word by a speaker or performer at a microphone. There are some major advantages to using this delivery method. It allows the speaker to maintain eye contact with the audience as they deliver their message, which builds rapport and connection between them. It also enables speakers to adjust their delivery if necessary due to unexpected inquires from an audience member.

Manuscript

Another delivery method that is still used today is manuscript delivery. With this delivery, a speaker or performer will usually deliver their presentation from notes written on paper which are then reviewed prior to an event. This delivery style allows for ease of use because there isn’t any memorization required for it, and you can also maintain eye contact with your audience. However, sometimes reading off of prepared text doesn’t allow speakers to connect with their audiences very much due to the lack of spontaneity in delivery, so they may be forced to improvise if necessary.

Impromptu

This type of delivery is one where no preparation has been done beforehand by the speaker or presenter at all. It involves speaking spontaneously without practice or memorizing anything ahead of time, just going in front of a group and speaking from the emotions, with an improvisational delivery. This type of delivery is more difficult to pull off because it requires that one have advanced skills with words, or else they will be stumbling over their speech.

Extemporaneous

This delivery style involves having a general idea of what you are going to say but not necessarily memorizing your information word for word. You can even make some changes during your presentation if something unexpected happens, such as someone asking a question out of the left field, which throws you off track. With this delivery style, there isn’t any need to stress about forgetting how something goes since you don’t know everything by heart ahead of time, making it easier than off-script; however, it still requires practice beforehand and notes.
